The driving force behind this development is the digitalization of light and, in particular, the advent of LED technology which has exponentially increased the possibilities for new functionalities and performance. LEDs not only provide a higher light quality for better visibility and more comfort, but also significant efficiency benefits and new design options.

Integration of LED lighting in all vehicle classes

From being a basic function to support nighttime driving, traditional automotive lighting has evolved into a key distinguishing feature for automotive design. The driving force behind this development is the digitalization of light and the widespread use of LED technology, which exponentially increases the possibilities for new functionalities and performance. LEDs not only provide significant efficiency benefits and new design options, but also higher light quality for better visibility and comfort.

Through “LEDification” the technology is expanding more and more into all vehicle segments and areas. One disadvantage, however, is the high price of LEDs at a time when OEMs are facing great cost pressure, which is why innovative LED solutions have so far been reserved for premium vehicles. Cost-effective and standardized modules are required if the benefits of the technology are to be extended to entry-level vehicles. Plastic Omnium Lighting offers a range of solutions that meet these requirements.

Bi-functional projector modules

Plastic Omnium Lighting’s bi-functional projector modules combine LED low beam and high beam in one module for optimum visibility at all times and a modern headlight design in all vehicle classes – without compromising on performance.

Thanks to their standardized, space-saving design, the bi-functional projectors can be easily integrated into vehicles. Furthermore, their reduced number of components and passive cooling make them more cost-efficient than traditional headlight modules.

Product overview

The latest and third generation of bifunction projectors, the B91R, features a particularly slim and space-saving design. Thanks to two individual LED boards, the module can switch between low and high beam without a mechanical shutter.  

The Bi-Matrix module from Plastic Omnium Lighting goes one step further by combining a super slim design with LED low beam and adaptive driving beam for a particularly pleasant driving experience at night. As soon as an oncoming vehicle is detected the module fades out the corresponding segments that illuminate it.

The B91R and the Bi-Matrix projector also feature a standardized design, a reduced number of components and passive cooling for an easy integration and greater cost efficiency. In addition, the slim construction of both modules enables a much narrower design of the headlights for an ultra-modern styling of the vehicle front.

A separately available LED driver module further simplifies the installation of the system in a customized headlamp. A protective circuit guards against overvoltage and excessive temperatures so that the module operates reliably in all conditions.

The B91R is based on TIR primary optics, which allows for particularly slim headlights.

The bi-matrix projection module uses silicone optics for adaptive driving beam.

Silicone optics for compact projectors and adaptive high beam solutions

The use of silicon technology in LED projectors ensures maximum optical efficiency, thermal stability and compact dimensions – the material of choice for extremely slim headlamp designs and adaptive driving beam solutions (matrix light).

Thanks to primary silicone lenses, the projector solutions (SFL) and adaptive driving beam solutions (SX2) from Plastic Omnium Lighting are particularly compact and durable, providing highly precise illumination of the road at maximum light output.

Headlamps equipped with the SFL and SX2 modules offer static and dynamic lighting functions. Advanced driving beam solutions are available with single- or double-row pixels. With the double-row SX2 and SFL base beam approach, the modules can easily produce low beam without a shutter and dynamic AFS functionality without a stepper motor.

Modular approach for flexibility

Highly efficient development cycles and a scalable approach with three performance versions make the eXchangeable Light Engine a particularly advanced product in terms of luminous flux, size and performance. The innovative modular approach allows the light engine to be used in different headlamp types – namely in 2, 3 and 4-reflector variants. The compact size contributes to even greater flexibility.
